    Went for lunch with a friend and was pleased with the food and service. Arrived around 12:15 and we were seated at a table right away. I ordered the crabcake sandwich and she had the buffalo burger. We decide to split the sandwiches so we could compare and make our own "surf and turf". The crabcake was ok but lacking any real flakes or chunks of crab. The buffalo burger was cooked as ordered by my friend which was "as rare as is legal". The result was perfect, just slightly rare and not dried out. The buns were delicious and held up to the fillings extremely well. Drinks of iced tea and and an Arnold Palmer were kept filled and perfect. I'll be back.

    I decided to "mix it up" and take my girlfriend here for her 30th birthday last Sunday. This was my first time visiting Yellow Springs aka Bizarro World. They were slammed so we got stuck sitting out on the patio during 84 degree temps with high humidity. It took longer than usual to get our orders taken and our water. I had ordered the Greek gyro with carrot slices (?) and she ordered their house burger, plain with a side of...carrolt slices? Ok! My gyro wasn't a traditional gyro by any stretch but had great flavor with locally raised lamb and I crushed all of it. No complaints. My girl's hamburger came with all the fixings so, of course, she had to ask for a new bun. That only took a few minutes. After we finished, we sat there in the heat ready to go and had to wait another 20 minutes for our check as we dejectedly munched on straggling raw carrot slices on our plates. They were extremely busy so I hate to shit on their service but on that day, it was too hot for the patio and the service just was not good for us. Maybe if we show up barefoot next time we'll get better service. I wouldn't recommend this place but we probably didn't belong there to begin with. A side note: Our water glasses were refilled once during our 70 minute endeavor with lukewarm water that had been sitting at their outdoor station with nary an ice cube in either of our glasses. Warm water on a hot, muggy day stinks. . $20.00 + $4.00 tip for a Greek gyro with a side of carrots and a hamburger with a side of, sigh....carrots.

    Awesome space The waiter seemed hurried Caramelized onion goat cheese dip- 5 stars. Black bean enchiladas- 3 stars. Something was missing, bland / dry enchiladas with really spicy sauce and it was a very small dish My date had the shrimp and grits, I tried the grits and they were really good, didn't try the shrimp but he said they were good 6 onion soup- pretty good. Nothing too ground breaking but solid All in all I liked the experience but would not get the enchiladas again and it seemed like things were pretty pricy for what you got but I'm not a chef so who knows

    I really liked this place a lot. The wait time on this beautiful Saturday morning was quite long. They had the outdoor patio closed because they thought it was going to rain. Once we got seated it did take a while to get our drinks and food, but honestly it was so worth it. The omelet I got was to die for. I got the portobella and spinach. The fruit cup was FRESH seasonal fruit (watermelon,strawberries, and blueberries). Oh my gosh it was so good. The English muffins are seriously amazing too. I will definitely be a returning customer!

    Best breakfast cafe in the Dayton area! Service was slow but well worth the wait. Highly recommend the French toast, biscuits, veggie scramble and the Mexican omelet. Coffee is great as well!

    My wife and I visit regularly for breakfast, and it is a good choice. My only critiques would be it is a bit pricey for what you get, and the quality varies from week to week. Get the Vicki cakes! Sandwiches at lunch are good, especially if you like more healthy options.

    Absolutely bad news bears. Stay away from this dive. Let me say that my husband and I prefer to support small local businesses. We are always looking for cute little hole in the walls to frequent. I can assure you we would not frequent this place if it meant I had to cook my own scrambled eggs for the rest of eternity. The wait was so long that I thought this place had to be amazing. No. It was so long because the chefs could not get their act together enough to serve the correct item. I had to return my omelette three times. It was missing something every single time. Let me add that there were only 3 ingredients. I finally told them that I would be fine with the muffin or whatever it was that they could get me quick. The waitress gave me a half a$$ smile and told me "the chefs are having a hard day." Really? getting spinach, onions and mushrooms in an omelette is tricky? Apparently so. The waitress was a slow as turtles stampeding through peanut butter. The whole experience just sucked. I can assure you we will never be back. Ever. Ever ever.

    Second time waiting for 20 minutes and leaving without getting a table. Today, waited 20 minutes only to be told due to some double secret policy, that it would be an additional 30 minutes. Apparently if you call in, have over 5 guests and are left handed, you zoom to the front of the line. Laissez-faire hippies are fine if you are shopping for a tube top, but for running a business, I will choose a little more structure in the future.

    By giving a one star rating it may wake the owner up and pay attention. The food and service are hit and miss, service is often better than the food. The chef thinks that it's OK to recook grilled salmon that was sent back partially cooked, by placing it in the microwave, turning it into $21 wet soggy unedable waste of time. Having just come back from the South my partner ordered a dish with cheese grits, disappointing, never have seen it served with lumps of cheese. The chicken and crab cakes were good. Not fantastic, the Mac and cheese was good, but then when you pay that much for something my 10 year old daughter was able to cook, it says it all.

    We went on Mother's Day with a reservation for six. Its not a huge place and it was very crowded and my memory was that there were few places for six. Well we were seated on the patio that I never knew existed. Inside was loud and crowded so this was a nice alternative. With some sprucing up it could be an awesome patio. I knew the kitchen would be stressed that day and we did wait a long time for our food but our waitress was good and kept the coffee and water coming. My Huevos Rancheros was very good. I tried my wife's pancakes...yum. Others said their sandwiches were very good. Lots of vegetarian options and organic items are offered on the eclectic menu. Ive honestly only had breakfast foods here so I cant comment beyond that but ALL the breakfast food is really tasty. Im going with a 4.5 and hope to get back to try more menu items.

    I think that this gem gets lost in the YS shuffle (though I might be wrong, since there are 40+ reviews...) We haven't chosen to eat here unless our first choice is too full or closed, and both times we've left happy our original choice didn't work out!! We took a chance and went on a Friday night (crazy!!!) with an art walk event scheduled around town (double crazy!!!) but were seated in less than 15 minutes after being given an approx. 30 min. wait time. Very eclectic, creative menu--- There's something for everyone, meat-eater or not. Mr. M&P had a massive, perfectly cooked buffalo burger, and after a TITANIC STRUGGLE with a desire to have one of everything on the menu, I went with the sweet potato latkes with black beans, dried cranberries, and goat cheese. I/We left happy, too full for dessert, and ready to come back soon to try the 8-10 other choices we didn't go for... AND to venture over for their (apparently) legendary weekend brunch!!

    What an awesome place! I ended up in Yellowsprings on a whim, my friend and I decided to stop and get dinner. I wasn't sure what to expect but the Sunrise Cafe might be one of my new favorite restaurants. The atmosphere is great, I loved the murals and the wall sconces at each booth. We were seated by a really friendly man and we had a great waitress. It took a while to decide what to order because everything sounds so good! I got the lavender and blueberry kombucha and it was very good. I like the subtlety of the flavors. For my meal I had the tomato bisque and the black bean enchiladas. The soup was incredible! I can't wait to go back and have it again. The enchiladas were also perfect and very filling. The perfect amount of spice, and the avocado goes perfectly with it. My friend had the potato and kale soup which was very yummy, and the veggie burger. I will most definitely be coming back!

    Sometimes the wait is a little long, and there's one booth that is uncomfortable if you're over 6 foot like me, but THE PANCAKES SWEET LORD THE PANCAKES. YOU HAVE NEVER TASTED ANYTHING LIKE THEM IN YOUR LIFE, I PROMISE YOU. They are chewy where they're supposed to be chewy, crispy where they're supposed to be crispy. They are served with clarified butter and syrup which the pancake's little holes and crevices actually seem to DRINK UP, and then ooze back out into your mouth or fork when you apply pressure. I promise you, it is the greatest breakfast thing you will ever experience. Also, get the whole fill up - the eggs are good, the buffalo sausage is lovely, all their breaded products are great but really the only reason to eat anything else in the world is so you can go back and take a bite of pancakes after with a fresh mouth.

    My favorite breakfast spot in Yellow Springs. The food always tastes fresh and perfectly seasoned. Their pancakes are what pancake dreams are made of, especially the pumpkin pancakes. I seriously wake up thinking about these pancakes. The staff is always friendly. They are usually packed but my coffee is always topped off and our waters were always full.

    This is seriously the best organic resturant ever. It is suoer busy during the weeknd and hard to get into. They have limited seating but staff and service is excellent. The bloody Mary's are too die for. On Monday nights they offer dinner and then u can head next door to see a movie or play. The price is included with your meal. I will be back every chance I get....seriously love this fresh place.

    THE ROLLS. THE GLORIOUS, INCREDIBLE ROLLS. Better than endorphins after a run, better than towels fresh out of the dryer, better than finding a $5 bill in your pocket. Better than all those things. If you're in YS, local or visiting, Sunrise will be the best decision you make all day.

    I'm not one to seek out organic anything or one to blabber about it once I've had it, but when in Yellow Springs... Sunrise is a cute little place. I had the salmon burger with carrot slices. Expecting some fried canned salmon and little carrot medallions, I was blown away when the patty was hand made and the carrots tasted fresh from the garden. The food took a little while to come out, but I don't have any complaints otherwise!

    This place sucks period ! We were told to wait for 5 minutes and then we were asked by the same hostess "is someone helping you guys" some 15 minutes later. We said to ourselves that it was ok. But err waited for 15 more minutes and nothing. We saw two empty tables but the hostess was trying to get us a table under the stairs (me and my friend are more than 6 feet tall). Instead of walking out we had the courtesy to inform the host that we were leaving and the hostess did not even apologize. Worst service I ever had in 2014 ! Period. Menu looked good but things looked overpriced for a small town.

    As others have observed, it seems to be very hit-and-miss. I'd been once before for dinner years ago and liked it, so we went for breakfast on a Sunday, and called on the way as their web site suggests to get on the wait list, but they didn't answer the phone. There was no wait when we got there so no issue, but kind of strange that they suggest you call and then don't answer. Anyway, as soon as I saw the 7 or 8 ounce coffee cup (looked like a kids tea party cup) I suspected it wouldn't go well and that I'd be constantly looking for a refill. But for 10 minutes the cup never hit bottom, during which time they took our order and brought then me the wrong thing. When I finally got the sausage omelette I ordered, I was surprised to find the sausage was one round lump in the middle of a wide omelette, so the middle three bites are almost pure sausage but the rest has none. About this time they quit bringing us coffee, so the last 7 or 8 minutes of our meal we were bone dry. I like supporting local places and having interesting choices, but the follow through was lacking. Over all I'd go elsewhere most of the time.

    After having just walked away hungry from the Corner Cone (kitchen closed, out of waffle cones) down the street, I wanted something healthy to balance out the sugar rush caused by having ice cream before dinner. I've noticed a few (older?) reviews mentioning questionable service and I have to admit I didn't experience that at all. Seated quickly, within five or ten minutes or so to clear off and clean up a table, I didn't feel like there was much waiting at all. Food moved at a reasonable pace, with skilled coursing: drinks, rolls, appetizer, salad, entrees and dessert. Staff was friendly, courteous and helpful - but I tend to get that a lot at the places I frequent. Touching on the ambiance, there was a mixture of natural light, candle sconces on the wall, and indirect lighting provided by overhead olive-oil-tin lamps with CFL bulbs: energy efficient and attractive! A large tea cup collection greets you up front to look at while you wait. Fresh whole wheat dinner rolls were brought to the table after drinks were ordered, and these were amazing. I inquired about them and all I got was "I know they're baked in that oven, right there!" with a little point toward the visible oven in the kitchen. I'm sure had I pressed, I would have gotten something closer to an ingredients list, but was happy to take them at their word that these are, indeed, vegan. In fact, when the server noticed that the rolls had been delivered with butter on the side (not vegan), she immediately apologized and exchanged it with a plate of dipping sauce - also the house dressing and very flavorful. I love it when the waitstaff remembers that I'm vegan, and I especially enjoy menus that mark vegan options. Hummus platter is vegan, which isn't a shocker because I get this just about everywhere I go. What did shock me was the hummus, which was extra flavorful. Four slices of red bell pepper stuck out of the top of the hummus in an almost comical arrangement, defying me to write something funny about them. Behind the bowl of hummus, there were a few stalks of cooked (pickled? sauteed?) asparagus. Tasty and piquant but I have no idea how else to describe them. My entree came with fresh cooked asparagus, and it was prepared perfectly, so the asparagus on the side of the platter was...different. An odd pairing with the other items on the plate: fresh broccoli crowns, a small pile of sprouts and carrots sliced on the bias. The carrots, by the way, were the absolute perfect size and shape for dipping. Not a single carrot broke in the very thick hummus. Well played, carrots, well played. Next came the salad, which had all the things I love about a good salad: diversity of greens, thinly grated carrots (this place knows carrots well), onions and two different vegan dressings available: Balsamic and the house dressing. Both dressings were tasty, and there was enough left over that when I ran out of hummus (I always run out) I could dip the remaining broccoli pieces to mix things up a bit. Two entrees caught my attention and, as is the case whenever I am eating out with someone else, I was able to sample both. My favorite item, as a vegan, was the veggie burger, which came with chips on the side that seemed like they were freshly made in-house but I forgot to ask. I loved how this veggie burger held up under the pressure of a bun, veggies and ketchup. I say this because other veggie burgers tend to fall apart; not a big deal, I just eat the rest with a fork, but I do enjoy a burger that stays together, even when cut for sharing. The bun was probably the best I've had in ages, and the veggies on top were perfect. Okay, I have to say this: I love it when a restaurant brings basic condiments to the table without the customer having to ask. True, some stuff is weird on a burger, but I'm a big fan of ketchup. Without asking, a plastic tureen of ketchup was brought to the table with the burger, with a cute little spoon. I imagine I could have asked for other things (mustard, hot sauce) but surprisingly, ketchup was all this masterpiece needed. I ordered the dal, which was the opposite of the flavor explosion mentioned above: a mild, fresh and healthy dish. On the left, a serving of lentils cooked perfectly with minimal seasoning. The center was filled with sticky brown rice, which was a perfect complement to the lentils. Off to the right were three stalks of mouthwatering asparagus, two of which I gave to my dinner date as a peace offering for eating too many of their chips. Ordered a slice of the lemon lavender cake. After having a bite or two, I was so excited, I knocked a full glass of water across the table and onto my date's lap; smooth move. A full water glass, by the way, because the waitstaff was so on-top of refilling the glasses and the water tasted good too. Overall, the meal was super tasty, and I didn't feel stuffed or bloated afterward. This is not your average restaurant, which I find refreshing. An easy four-star for me!

    This is easily my favorite place to eat in the Dayton area. It has a nice casual feel, and a friendly hippy-ish vibe that is relaxing. I initially had breakfast here a few times and was blown away. If you like healthy, unique, flavorful foods and spots that have character and personality, I would definitely recommend it! The coffee is some of the best I've ever had. They use fresh ingredients and organic foods, which I like. The staff is friendly and knows about the food options. I like it that you can see the cooks working on the food. I've since been there a few more times for dinner and am equally impressed. The bison burger was amazing, everything else I've tried has been perfect. It's also great that they display local artwork on the walls--although the quality of it seems to vary. A few times I've been there, there has been a wait--well worth it!

    On a recent trip five-day trip, I ate at restaurants in the Yellow-Springs / Xenia / Cincinnati / Dayton area, and the brunch I had here at Sunrise Cafe, consisting of huevos rancheros (tortilla, scrambled egg, salsa, scallions, and sour cream) and a glass of lemonade, were probably the best meal I had on my trip. Excellent food. I am definitely returning! Nice atmosphere and nice people, too.

    Great place. Mostly you'll see locals here. It's by far the best place in town. They feature organic and local foods, have wonderful sauces, and very friendly service. My menu favorites are the Saffron Scallops and Vic's "everything" burger. Make reservations. You'll need them.

    I've had breakfast here three times in the last year. Each time I was very disappointed. Portions are small, selection limited and the flavor is way below average. All the staff seemed very bored and unfriendly. Drive a few miles north on St Rt 68 and eat at Bob Evans or even Burger King! Skip,this place.

    Only ever hit this place for breakfast, always get the same breakfast sandwich, but always love it just the same. When busy, you're going to wait awhile, but typically you get what you wait for. :). Today was slow so the food was very fast and seemed even larger than usual. Coffee was delicious and STRONG as always! Haven't had the urge to try lunch or dinner yet but still love breakfast.

    Update: the Sunrise is still very hit and miss, making their food extremely overpriced when they fail on the execution. For $20+ an entree for many dinners on the menu, what they charge is a crime considering the poor execution and unreliable nature of the food. Having been here a few times now with 4 total in our party for dinner each time, I can honestly say they "miss" roughly 50 percent of the time. I have only been here for dinner and want to love it. I really really do. The dishes all sound great and, if you are lucky, some even taste great. The biggest fail this past time was the coconut dal. Bland bland bland. We had to ask for some hot sauce in order to make it edible. I live in the northeast but am in this area semi-regularly and am afraid I will have to bid the Sunrise Cafe adieu. I tried to like you, I really did. I wanted to like you. However, I have been served raw salmon when I asked for medium. I have been served soup with zero salt and an amount of black pepper that could kill a grown man. I have been served coconut dal that was astonishingly flavorless. Fool me once, Sunrise, shame on you. Fool me three times, the shame is all on me. Lesson learned.

    This place has no microwave and no fryer so expect a wait. The food is amazing because it is fresh not mass produced!!!! I live on the west coast now and whenever I'm back I eat at least twice a week. It's very hard to understand why this place is not 5 stars, unless people around here don't know what quality food is!

    We have been wanting to hit Yellow Springs since we moved to Dayton. So, before heading out I looked up local spots on Yelp. This place got decent ratings, so we gave it a try for breakfast. The restaurant itself is kind of dingy and nasty. We had crumbled bacon under our table. The service was marginal at best, definitely very slow. The food was good. It wasn't amazing, but it filled our tummies. I also took a piece of their strawberry-rubarb pie home for dessert - NOT GOOD very perfumie. We probably won't be back.

    We came in here after a minor hike through Clifton Gorge, and I have to say: it was surprisingly good! Think "natural/hippie food, but tasty." You'll need to make liberal use of the salt-shaker on the table, but there's some memorable stuff on the menu. The whole wheat rolls that start off on the table are nutty, savory, and deeply satisfying. The salad of sprouts and pickled vegetables (I told you) is simply delicious. Get it. My entree was a special of chicken-jalapeno meatballs in a cilantro yogurt sauce over spaghetti squash pretending to be pasta. It was a little weird, and the meatball to squash ratio was too high for my tastes, but it's definitely inspired me to serve my favorite pasta sauce over sauteed zucchini next time. My wife's salmon/polenta/watermelon/beet combination wasn't quite as good, but some of the elements had promise. I left happy, dreaming of cooking squash, and thinking: why does Yellow Springs have such good food?

    My husband and I just ate here on Sunday, and we fell in love with this place! The prices are awesome and the food is great! Our server was very kind and laid back and suggested the bloody mary.... best one I have ever had in my life! There were so many vegetables bursting out of it! It was like a piece of artwork! The food is all fresh and prepared perfectly! The wait wasn't too long so we just went for a little walk and grabbed a cup of coffee from Dino's! Highly recommend!

    A little on the expensive side but when you consider how much work is put into each dish, it definitely is worth it. All the ingredients come from local farms and gardens and are brought straight to the shop itself where it is prepared by cooks who really know what they're doing! The menu also changes with the seasons which means that you'll probably never have the same dish twice! I think the greatest part is that the cooks aren't afraid to experiment and create new dishes out of things you wouldn't think would go well together. If you need a recommendation, try the pumpkin-ginger gnocchi and make sure to have the avocado foster with bourbon-bacon iced cream for dessert ;)

    Anyone who gives this place less than 5 stars is a moron. This is some of the best food in Ohio. If you're in town, don't miss this restaurant. Just make sure you have time because it takes a little while for the food to arrive since it's always cooked fresh. My mom and I come to this restaurant on almost a bi-weekly basis. We've never been disappointed.

    I typically love this place and despite the typical unattentative wait staff I enjoy my expereince here. However, the last time I was here it was a complete fail. Our waitress was very late to greet us and rarely came by the table. I was given the wrong order and when I asked for it to be corrected they basically served me a raw piece of meat. The waitress was even horrified by it but why did she give it to me in the first place. After two orders went wrong and my family was done eating it was pointless to go on. Plus the slab of raw meat Ihad just been given was a great way to lose my appitite all together. Our server took FOREVER to finally get us our check and she was so nice to let me know that they wouldn't me charging me for the two orders they completley messed up. What a bummer. I wish this place would take a little time to coach their staff on customer service.

    I'm giving this a three star rating because when I went inside, I immediately wanted to scrub the place down. Seriously, it's kind of gross. But, I thought, if I can survive Russia, I can survive eating here. I'm glad I did. The food is absolutely delicious. I had the biscuits and gravy, which was served in the cutest little mug--the biscuit on the bottom, topped with the sausage gravy (Note: all the plates/utensils were very clean). I've never had it served that way, and I loved it. I also had the portabella and spinach omelette, which was pretty good...plenty of cheese and mushrooms and lots of spinach. I think next time I will try the pancakes. I have no idea why people are complaining about the price. It was certainly comparable to any other breakfast place, like Bob Evans or First Watch, plus the food was better. Maybe Ohians aren't used to what serving sizes should actually be, and so they think they are getting stiffed on portions? That's the only thing I can think of. Sunrise, if you scrub that place down, I will give you four stars.

    The food was delicious and the service was great, however I can only give it 3 stars. I ordered the cheeseburger and although it was flavorful and well made, the portion was way too small. Usually, at restaurants I end up taking most of my meal home but here I finished my burger and was left wanting more :-(

    If you like good food and a clean, cheery atmosphere with good service.....don't go here. Very disappointing all round. The Winds is definitely the place to eat in Yellow Springs. Unfortunately, sunrise was the only place open.

    Great whole wheat biscuits and I love their commitment to local and organic food, but I would like to see a stronger commitment to customer service. After a 30-some minute wait, my friends and I were skipped over for seating when the inattentive (though friendly) hostess wrote down the number for our group, but not a name. Once we were finally seated, we watch other newly-seated groups order food, receive their drinks and receive some bread before our waiter even made it over to say hi and take our drink order (about 10 minutes). Being ravenously hungry at that point, we ordered quickly and then waited for another 38 minutes (I know, because I timed it) before our food was delivered...and we all ordered omelets - not a slow-cooking food! The food was ok, but somewhat bland...but at that point, we scarfed it down like hungry campers at the end of a long day's worth of hiking. Could the super-poor service have been a fluke? Possibly. Could it have been a systemic problem? My gut says yes. Will I go back to find out? Highly doubtful...I just can't imagine risking another two-hour of time to find out.

    Oh Sunrise Café, you are so promising and yet so often disappointing - it frustrates me. I get the sense that somewhere there is an owner with great taste - creates a great atmosphere, puts interesting things on the menu & dreams up creative daily specials. However, whoever that is seems to rarely be around and the delivery/execution is often terrible. I've had my worst service experiences ever here, once waiting 1.5 hours before getting my food and always feeling like the servers just disappear forever with no one in charge. Fabulous-sounding meals are often poorly seasoned; we've learned to never, ever order the specials no matter how good they might seem in writing. On the positive side, most of my worst experiences have been lunch or dinner - I think maybe there's more management for breakfast? And they have the best pancakes I have ever eaten.

    I normally love this place as they offer vegan options, but my last few visits have been very disappointing. My most recent attempt was on Sunday, 10/13. We arrived at 12:50pm and since we did not have a reservation we were told there was a 20 minute wait, no problem, I asked if we could wait outside and they said sure. At 1:20pm we checked and they said we were next on the list. We found this somewhat confusing since the party that entered right behind us without a reservation as well, was seated 10 minutes ago. So we go out side and wait some more. At 1:50 we go back in and see three tables open, cleared and ready to go. The "hostess" looks at us with a shocked face and says (before we can open our mouths) "Oh, I can seat you now." Needless to say they had forgotten about us, I guess when they write you name on the list you need to remind them to refer to it every so often, Given they close at 2pm and I didn't want to be rushed so we left. I know I am only one customer to them, but I live close and I will not give them m business again. I don't expect to find this review on their website either. :-)

    Wow...just awful,terrible service. The food was okay,but our server was nowhere to be found throughout the entire 2 hours that we sat,waited and waited some more. Our server could,however, be seen texting behind the counter and chatting with co-workers. Oh,also the table was filthy dirty with old hashbrowns hanging out behind the condiments. My daughter spilled her water and was never offered or brought a refill. Also,we were allowed to clean up the spill ourselfves,with our own napkins which were also never replenished.

    My wife and I have been dining here a few times a month for Sunday breakfast. What a wonderful way to start the day. We have tried a good many of the menu selections and some of the daily specials and we are always pleased. Staff is friendly and always on top of coffee refills. Recommend reservations, there is limited seating

    A lovely Bloody Mary: cabbage, olives, celery, fennel stem... Vegan Fill-Up was yummy: homemade English muffins, sauteed spinach and mushrooms, homefries, and veggie patties. The veggies patties were quite yummy with oats, flaxseeds, sage, and what not. The only complaint: the service was TERRIBLY SLOW. We waited for about an hour for our food.

    The food is alright - but it's certainly not *THAT* good to warrant the high, high prices. The service is really poor. Don't get me wrong - you can hit the odd day where things are going good and you have a normal waiter experience - but most of the time, it is slow, slow, slow. And you don't get not much help in terms of answering questions about the menu items. If its a weekend and there's any kind of wait for a table - it will be practically forever before you actually eat. And the crazy part is - when you do get seated, it still takes a light-year to get drinks, your order in, your food out, your bill. So you see firsthand why the wait is out the door - everything is moving at a snails' pace inside. I gave it a few tries - kept thinking it was a fluke and things would get better. Now I'm pretty sure I'll not be going back there.

    *warning*Aweful AWEFUL food VERY Over priced! I wish I had not given them any money. I got the hummus plate DISCUSTING! I usually love hummus I have never come across hummus i dont like until now. I got my daughter a cheese burger she said it tasted funny so i took a bite it tasted like dirt and charcoal and something i cant describe. The only thing that was good was the chips that came with the hamburger. I WILL NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN!!

    This is one of my favorite restaurants! They have excellent dinner and brunch, but the service sometimes isn't the best. That is the only reason I would give this place 4 instead of 5 stars. Great seasonal local food!

    Great food. Great service, especially those hot guys in the mornings. Breakfast is a must; get the sunrise sampler. Veggie burgers are homemade. Cocktail bar on the weekends and food until 2am.

    My husband and I went there for dinner. The service was friendly, but the food was terrible. My husband has a shell-fish allergy and asked if the special (a halibut dish) was made with shell fish broth. The waitress assured us that shellfish had not even been near it. Sure enough, his throat began to itch right after dinner. They had probably used a powdered broth and did not even know what went into it. I had ordered a tofu special with a side of mustard greens. The dish was very bland, extremely oily and greens were completely burnt. All in all, this was a VERY disappointing dining experience and could have ended in an emergency room visit due to the kitchen staff's complete cluelessness about the ingredients of their own dishes. Needless to say, the $20 we paid for one dish was a huge rip-off. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

    I left with a bad case of buyers remorse-- and two hours later! Sunday dinner sounded tasty, but there is nothing worst than a cafe style restaurant trying to be upscale. Thanks for using good local ingredients, but no thanks on one waitress for the night, and thirty minutes between courses... and we had to send the steak back which set us back another thirty. If you're gonna have customers paying $20 for an entree, the setting and service needs to be a higher standard too. TRY WINDS. Really liked it a year ago. Would have been first choice, but was closed . Ps. I really like Mac and Cheese Gourmet Style, but theirs was an alfredo. Way too rich for an entree. Wished for a souflee style.

    I had family visiting and they wanted to head to Yellow Springs for awhile before getting on the road. We stopped in here for lunch....busy as it is Sunday. Seated at 1230, waitress took our orders at 1245, food out at 115. I enjoy the food here, but having only one server on Sunday is a bit shortsighted. An hour here really cut into our shopping time, so if you are time constrained, it's probably best to find another place to dine.

    Sunrise is one of my favorite places in the world. That being said, I'll get the negatives out of the way.... The place is tiny and there aren't many seats. So either get in early, make reservations or be forced to wait. OK, now that I've said that, here is the good stuff: - The food = amazing. You will like everything on the menu. I promise. Sunrise is great because it serves good hippie food (for brown rice, salad and bean loves like me) but it can also cook up a damn good hamburger for all you carnivorous folks out there. There is literally something for everything. So if you're vegan, celiac, health conscious, foodie, meat-lover, or picky - you will find something to love. Plus, the type of food you can get is diverse. Anything from street food to gourmet and everything in between. - The place turns into a cocktail bar at night. The guy that makes the cocktails is a legit artist. They're amazing. And the place (including the kitchen) is open until 2 am. Sweet.

    Well, since my last review almost three years ago, we've been for dinner - very good, not great, but very good, and a couple of times for breakfast. This morning we decided to get up a bit early and head into Y.S. for breakfast and a little shopping. A bit of a wait, nothing too bad, need to call ahead next time as they will reserve a table for you if you call and make a reservation. I have to echo the comments of other reviewers that you shouldn't come if you're on a schedule - between the potential wait and the time it takes for them to get the food to the table (as others have pointed out a result of the fact that they don't nuke your entree or anything else for that matter), it takes some time. Our biscuits and gravy - wheat biscuits and local organic sausage - and our Sunrise omelet (Amish Cheddar and organic mushrooms) were both very good and ordered w/o toast plenty of food. The coffee wasn't fantastic but also organic which is a plus - overall this place has really concentrated on getting local and/or organic stuff onto the menu and for that they get big props. This is a casual joint with good food and a relaxed atmosphere - if you're in a hurry and are looking for the maitre'd, you're in the wrong place. If you've got some time and just want a laid back, quality meal served by a young, casual, friendly bunch, enjoy. We'll be back and this time we'll call ahead.

    80% of the time the restaurant is wonderful. Food is excellent. Service is at times grumpy and missing in action. Water and coffee are at times scarce, dessert descriptions sound wonderful and are most likely tasty but not easy to order. We were looking forward to ordering our dessert when the check was placed on the table, no offer of a sweet. I suppose we are better off skipping the sweets.

    A great Valentine's Day lunch at the Sunrise; our reservations got us seated quickly, ahead of a few other couples -- so be sure to call ahead! I had the Scallion, Swiss & Sausage omelet, which was just about perfect, a great blend of flavors; my wife had the Sausage Gravy & Biscuit which was, she said, quite possibly the best she's ever had! We both ordered the Sunrise Potatoes on the side -- home fried red potatoes with caramelized onions (to die for!) Our waiter was attentive without hovering, keeping the water and coffee topped up while checking to see if we needed anything, and he easily answered our questions about the specials and menu. Very impressive service considering the packed tables -- we did have a noticeable wait after ordering, but that is clearly due to the food being freshly prepared, and is a welcome trade-off. Something many people may not know is that the Sunrise Cafe re-opens at 9pm on weekends as the Sunset Martini Grill, serving a limited menu (including their crazy-good burgers -- try the Vic Burger for a chef's-choice masterpiece!) as well as a variety of both classic and trendy martinis. There's also a full bar, and an assortment of unusual beers -- and they're open until 2:30 am to give us night-owls a place to perch!

    The only reason why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is because most of the time the service is slow. Getting seated, getting your order taken, getting the food out and even getting and paying for the check seems to be slow. Also, I hate how they close between 2pm-5pm! Their coffee is the best around! I don't even have to put cream or sugar in it, it's that good. I'm not even a huge coffee fan. Their breakfast--the best. My favorite is the Mexican omelet with two slices of wheat toast topped with their fantastic jelly. I hope to one day try something different and order off of their lunch or dinner menu!

    **let me jus start by saying INTENSE BLOODY MARY'S! W.O.W. ive never tasted/seen anything like it...its a mos def, must try kinda drank :P but i will say that if you dont like garlic, this is not the drink for you. the food? well, i had the crab cake sandwich and it was.....jus ok. im not saying it wasnt good, but it wasnt to my tasting... though i will say that the wonderful company that i was with had great food: hummos sandwich, veggie pita, and tandoori chicken quesadillas, which were all great...maybe i picked the wrong dish? the restaurant as a whole was simple and homey...this is a great place for vegans and those who can take a couple hours to wait for their food and jus enjoy the atmosphere.. is it worth the wait? i would give them a second chance :)

    Giving this place a 3 was a bit of a struggle. First and foremost, the food is absolutely fantastic. The food deserves 5 stars and then some. The service, however, deserves 0 stars. There was a 20-30 minute wait for a table, that's fine. Most small places have a wait. Once seated there was another 20 minute wait before menus were provided... and then another 30 minute wait before drink orders and food orders were taken! After ordering it took nearly another 30 minutes for the food to come out! Keep in mind there is no exaggeration in my statements, from arriving to the restaurant to eating food it took nearly 2 hours. I cannot in good faith recommend this place to anyone unless you can handle the service.

    My wife and I visited this cafe for the 1st time back in September and had a wonderful experience, as a result we thought it would be an excellent place to take our grown kids during the Christmas holidays, unfortunately our 2nd visit was very disappointing. The temperature inside the cafe was very cold and when our waitress did finally get around to asking us for our order she was unable to answer our questions about menu items. I will say that when we did receive our food it was good (although we did have to send one item back since our daughter had ordered vegetarian however the sandwich she received was not). I doubt we will ever return.

    Awesome breakfast place. Brought my daughter here and had the biscuits and gravy and the pancakes. When you are in Yellow Springs eat here. You will not be disappointed.The best Pancakes ever!!!!

    We stopped in on a Wednesday evening. We were seated immediately, but other than that, the service was awful. We were in the mood for vegetarian. The (small) falafels weren't bad (the smidgen of sauce on them was good, could have used more), but nothing else of note in that dish. My husband was served the wrong meal -- waitress never did come back to see if everything was ok, so he went ahead and ate it. $13 for a plain bowl of black beans and quinoa -- seriously? you've got to be kidding. The meal he had ordered sounded promising, but we'll never know as we don't plan to go back. No water refills. If you want taste, don't get the house dressing on your salad. Mostly just oily. Had to flag someone else down to get our check (and no, they were not busy). Some people have commented on the atmosphere -- yes, it is the typical, stuck in the 60's YS hole in the wall. But, then that is what many people go to YS for. And, no, it didn't look very clean to us either, but I suppose it must pass health inspections? For the prices, it would seem they could clean it up some. Typical YS decor --artsy murals floor to ceiling (including ceiling). I did like the olive can lights.

    Awesome food, friendly service. So much home made food, great veriety, great atmosphere. i had the buffalo burger with salad. it seems the menu changes fairly often just a little with whats available. If I lived closer I'd go here a lot. only downside is that its a little pricey.

    My favorite spot in Yellow Springs. A bright, cheerful, casual little cafe with a great breakfast menu (particularly the omelets!). I don't know what it is about the atmosphere here that's so appealing, but it's just such a pleasure to visit.

    Went there three times. First time was during Dayton's Restaurant Week and the food was fantastic. 2nd time went and the food was without any flavor at all. Tonight we went for 3rd time to see if last time was a bad day for them. It was not. We sat for 1 hour before getting out food which was without any flavor at all. We stood at front door for about 10 minutes before being acknowledged by anyone. We only saw our waiter three times. Once to get order, once to give us food (one hour later) and finally to get paid. A frozen dinner in the microwave will beat this place every time.

    Food is good and thoughtfully prepared. I love their thin pancakes for breakfast. I have had Salmon on a plank, angus burger, and some pasta dishes for dinner. All were very good. Its a small place with a cozy comfortable decor and a private feeling (due to the fact that most of their seating is high-back booths). Service is always friendly but very slow, so be prepared for a leisurely dining experience and don't go if you are on a tight schedule.

    Place has gone to h3ll! Have been going for years but as it has gotten fancier, service has become an afterthought. Tried today, with NO ONE waiting I was told it would be an hour. As I left, the lady called me back from the street saying, really, she could seat me in five minutes. I should have kept going but I went back. I ordered the Buffalo Filet, MEDIUM RARE. Apparently seldom gets ordered because the waitress kept correcting me with "Buffalo Burger". NO, and I pointed it out on the menu... Anyway, 35 minutes later, they tell me its going to be a while! Really? 15 minutes after that, a waiter announces he's replacing my waitress and the filet will be up in a minute. 5 minutes later he slides a plate in front of me which appears to contain a charcoal brick suspiciously covered with a strange piece of bread. Upon removing the bready thing, the steak was nothing if not BLACK. I gave it a try but it cut like it was a wooden puck. It was well past well done, so I declined to eat and paid the 8 dollars for the shoddy glass of wine. Yep, no comp or anything for the disappointing waste of an hour of my life. I'll stick to Coco's in Dayton where service is tops, and meal execution is flawless. Shame, really...used to like the Sunrise so much, I took many friends there.
